"Sunset quartz"

Weight: 1.48 ct
Size: 8.8 x 6.9 x 4.6 mm

This type of quartz was first discovered in 2006 in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with the vein producing only several kilograms of material suitable for faceting.
Due to a very reduced amount of rough material, “sunset quartz” became a true unique stone destinated to gem collectors.
The yellowish and orange color of the quartz is the result of microscopic needle-like inclusions.
To produce this attractive color, the material is heat treated.

The description and study of “sunset quartz”, was published in Gems&Gemology, 2006, Vol. 42, Issue 4, p. 277: http://www.gia.edu/Winter-2006-Gem-News-International
